Latimeria Chalumnae was one of the oldest odd-looking fish of the world. This strange-looking animal was thought to be extinct since the end of Cretaceous era of 65 million ago. This is considered by many as the living fossil. This odd-looking creature was first found alive in 1938 by a fisherman at the coast of South Africa. The second specimen of Coelacanth was found in 1952 at the island of Comoros near Madagascar.
Its fins are resemblances to bones which looks like lobes. Due to its lobe like gesture it is called the lobe finned fish. Its nickname was “four legs”. Its scales are very unique and its scales are called Cosmoid. Its scales are woven very tightly and very rough. Its rough scale guard this fish from stone and predators. Coelacanth could be the length of 6.5 feet and it could be the weight of as much as 80kg. Its deep blue color helps it to conceal from the predators. Eyes of this creature are very sensitive to light. when they comes close to the light , their eyes started to glow. These creature are generally found as deep as 700 meters. This strange creature can give birth 5 to 25 “pups” at a time. In 1989 Coelacanth was declared as the endangered species of deep-sea creatures by the International Community.
